Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid has shattered a glass ceiling for Bangladesh cricket, becoming the first umpire from his nation to join the prestigious Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. This elevation follows a rigorous review by the International Cricket Council.
ICC Selection Committee:
The selection committee, led by ICC General Manager of Cricket, Wasim Khan, included renowned figures like Sanjay Manjrekar (former player and commentator), Tony Hill (retired New Zealand umpire), and Mike Riley (consultant officiating expert).
Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served on the International Panel since 2006. His officiating career began with an ODI between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Mirpur back in 2010.
His impressive resume includes appointments in 10 Men’s Test Matches, 63 Men’s ODIs, 44 Men’s T20Is, 13 Women’s ODIs, and 28 Women’s T20Is. Sharfuddoula has also officiated at high-profile tournaments like the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups (2017, 2021), the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup (2023), and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup (2018).
Expressing his excitement, Sharfuddoula Ibn Shahid said:
“Being named to the ICC Elite Panel is a tremendous honor. As the first Bangladeshi on the panel, it’s even more special. I’m eager to prove I deserve this trust and ready for the challenges ahead.”
He also extended gratitude to the ICC, the BCB, his colleagues, and his support system of family and friends.
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice:
In other news, Chris Broad has stepped down from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees after an illustrious 21-year tenure. However, the panel has been reduced in size from seven to six members.
