Sri Lanka’s hopes for the upcoming Bangladesh Test series have taken a hit with the suspension of star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga. This setback comes just after Hasaranga declared his return to Test cricket, following a brief retirement from the format.

Hasaranga’s suspension stems from a Code of Conduct violation during Sri Lanka’s recent ODI series against Bangladesh. In the third ODI, the player was found guilty of breaching Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to expressing dissent towards an umpire’s decision.

The incident involved Hasaranga snatching his cap from the umpire and expressing displeasure with the officiating. His actions resulted in a 50% match fee fine and three demerit points. Unfortunately, these latest demerit points have pushed Hasaranga’s total to eight within a 24-month period.

ICC regulations dictate that eight demerit points automatically convert to four suspension points. Consequently, Hasaranga is now banned from the two upcoming ICC World Test Championship fixtures against Bangladesh.

Wanindu Hasaranga’s Recent Disciplinary Issues

This isn’t the all-rounder’s first disciplinary incident. Last month, he received a two-T20I suspension for accruing five demerit points against Afghanistan.

Blow to Sri Lankan Squad

Hasaranga’s absence is undoubtedly a blow to the Sri Lankan side as they prepare to face Bangladesh.

Additional Note:

Sri Lanka’s ODI captain, Kusal Mendis, also received a 50% fine and three demerit points for a Level 2 offense. He verbally abused the umpires at the conclusion of the third match against Bangladesh.
