The Bihar Cricket Association has named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as captain of Bihar for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, handing the young batter his first senior captaincy.
The BCA announced a 17-member squad on Friday for Bihar's opening two matches of the tournament, with Suraj Kashyap named vice-captain. Bihar begin their campaign in Indore, against Saurashtra on 14 November and Railways on 16 November.
What the BCA president said
BCA president Harsh Vardhan said Vaibhav had already shown "tremendous talent, confidence and maturity at a young age" and that the responsibility would give him "another opportunity to grow as a cricketer and leader".
A remarkable rise
The appointment caps a remarkable rise for the young batter. He caught the eye with his aggressive batting for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL in 2026 and has since broken into India's T20I side. In the recent third T20I against New Zealand, he opened with Abhishek Sharma as the pair put on 118 without loss in the first six overs — a world record for the highest powerplay score in men's T20I cricket. Vaibhav made 45 off 19 balls in a 133-run opening stand.
