Collins Obuya, the Kenyan cricketer who ignited his nation’s 2003 World Cup run, has announced his retirement from international cricket. After a remarkable 23-year career that began in 2001, Obuya’s final match was a recent fixture against Uganda in the African Games.
Collins Obuya Said
“It has been a tremendous honor to represent Kenya,” Obuya said. “My sincere gratitude goes out to my teammates, family, and everyone who supported me throughout this journey. I’ve loved every minute, and now it’s time to focus on coaching and growing the sport in Kenya.”
Obuya’s impact on Kenyan cricket is undeniable. A consistent top scorer, his leg-spin bowling proved a formidable weapon, particularly during the 2003 World Cup. His standout performance against Sri Lanka – claiming 5 wickets including top batters de Silva, Sangakkara, and Jayawardene – propelled Kenya’s historic run to the semi-finals.
Collins Obuya’s Best Innings
His 98 against Australia in the 2011 World Cup remains a high-point, even in defeat. Obuya served as Kenyan captain after their 2011 campaign, holding the position for two years. He remains a top scorer in both ODI and T20I formats for Kenya, and his 60 international wickets further cement his all-around legacy.
Collins Obuya’s influence extends beyond his own accomplishments – his brothers, Kennedy and David Obuya, have also represented Kenya on the international stage.
