Despite a determined 81* from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh fell 192 runs short on the fifth day, unable to counter Sri Lanka’s relentless assault. The win propels Sri Lanka to fourth place with a 50% points percentage.
Sri Lanka’s success came as their fast bowlers defied expectations on spin-friendly Bangladeshi pitches, claiming an impressive 33 of the 40 wickets taken. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva was effusive in his praise for his pacemen:
“I’m an aggressive captain, and especially on flat wickets, I prefer our fast bowlers,” de Silva said. “Our bowlers prove they don’t need a green top to take wickets. This kind of series win is a huge confidence boost for our team.”
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged the need for improvement and emphasized the importance of match practice:
“We need to send our Test specialists on A-team tours for better preparation,” Shanto explained. “This will give them experience in different conditions and help us adapt.”
Scrutiny remains on the Bangladeshi batting lineup after failing to break the 190-run mark in three of their four innings. Shanto remains optimistic about their potential for improvement.
Looking Ahead
Bangladesh will seek to turn things around when they face Pakistan in the World Test Championship 2025 later this year in August. Sri Lanka will test their mettle against England in a challenging three-match series on English soil.
