In a nail-biting encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) snatched a dramatic victory from the Gujarat Titans (GT) in their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash.
The formidable 199-run target set by GT seemed out of reach for PBKS, but a remarkable partnership between young stars Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma turned the tide, leading to an unforgettable three-wicket win.
PBKS captain Shikhar Dhawan elected to bowl first after winning the toss, with both teams making one change due to injuries. PBKS brought in Sikandar Raza to replace Liam Livingstone, while Kane Williamson stepped in for GT’s David Miller.

GT’s innings was led by a stellar unbeaten 89 off 48 balls from skipper Shubman Gill, who showcased his signature batting class on his favored ground. Gill’s innings included a stunning straight six off Kagiso Rabada and he narrowly missed securing his century in the final over.
Gill found early support from Kane Williamson (26 off 22) and a quickfire 33 off 19 from Sai Sudharsan. Williamson, in his debut match for GT this season, looked settled before being dismissed.
Sudharsan’s brisk cameo energized the innings, but it was Rahul Tewatia’s inventive 23 off 8 balls that ultimately propelled GT to a competitive 199.
The PBKS chase began with Jonny Bairstow’s early fireworks, but GT struck back when Umesh Yadav dismissed Dhawan. A promising partnership between Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh offered a glimmer of hope before Noor Ahmed claimed both their wickets. PBKS struggled in the middle overs as GT maintained consistent pressure.
The turning point came with the arrival of Shashank Singh, who immediately went on the offensive. He was joined by Jitesh Sharma, who briefly ignited the chase with two massive sixes before falling.
PBKS needed a daunting 47 runs in the final four overs but Singh, who reached a blistering fifty off just 25 balls, and substitute Ashutosh Sharma kept them in the hunt. A crucial penultimate over saw Singh smash a six, leaving PBKS needing just seven off the final six balls.
The final over was filled with drama. Ashutosh was caught at long-on, but Singh secured a vital boundary, followed by a lucky leg-bye, sealing a sensational win for the Punjab Kings.
The match-winning 43-run partnership between Singh (61 off 29) and Sharma (31 off 17) will long be remembered as a testament to the IPL’s ability to showcase emerging talent.
