As South Africa prepares to host Sri Lanka in a thrilling six-game limited-overs series, the Proteas women are focused on honing their skills for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Starting Wednesday, the teams will clash in three T20Is followed by three ODIs – all part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 cycle.
Laura Wolvaardt Said
Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt emphasizes the significance of this series: “With limited cricket remaining before the World Cup, these T20Is are crucial for experimentation and finalizing our World Cup starting XI.”
This series marks the first time since 2019 that South Africa will host Sri Lanka Women in a bilateral contest. Their last encounter, a nail-biting T20 World Cup match last year, saw Sri Lanka emerge victorious by just three runs. Wolvaardt stresses that South Africa will not underestimate their opponents, especially after their recent T20I series win over England.
Reflecting on her own performance, Wolvaardt admits to a less-than-stellar series against Australia but found her rhythm during the WPL. “I’ve focused on sharpening my technique, and I’m feeling fresh and eager to bat again,” she says.
Wolvaardt also celebrates teammate Sune Luus, who will become South Africa Women’s most capped T20I player during this series. She praises Luus’s consistent batting performance and leadership experience, calling her an invaluable asset to the team.
